Scholarship honors legendary advisers

What traditionally has been known as the Northern Star Alumni Scholarship took on new prestige this year, thanks to a sizable donation.
Henry de Fiebre and his wife, Karen Rothe, donated enough money to permanently endow the $3,000 scholarship. That is, the fund has reached a level where the annual interest pays for the scholarship. Hank is a Northern Star alum and a 1972 NIU graduate. The couple has funded the scholarship anonymously for the past few years.
At Hank's and Karen's request, the scholarship also was renamed the Campbell-Thompson Northern Star Alumni Scholarship, honoring longtime advisers Roy G. Campbell and Jerry Thompson. Campbell, adviser from 1961 until his death in 1971, was named the nation's outstanding college newspaper adviser in 1966. Thompson replaced Campbell in 1971 and stayed until his retirement in 1995, helping thousands of students find their ways into careers that led to outstanding journalism across the country.
This year's scholarship winner is Kevin Wendt, who has served the Star as a reporter, sports editor, editor in chief and nite news editor. Wendt is one of 14 students in the world to have been chosen this summer for The Poynter Institute's Fellowship in Visual Journalism.
