
Dave Buswell is retired after completing a 40-year career in Washington, D.C. His last position was Vice President of the Italian multinational corporation FIAT and head of its Washington office. He is also a retired U.S. Navy captain with more than 30 years of active and reserve service. Dave and his wife, Yoko, now live in Heathsville, Va., on a tributary of the Potomac River where it meets the Chesapeake Bay. His hobbies are boating and golf. He is also a real estate broker. Dave was the Northern Star editor in chief in 1957-58.
Bruce Clinton Ladd, Jr., published his third book, "Ladd/Paddock Family: A Perspective," a genealogical and autobiographical treatment of his Chicago-based family. His earlier books were "Crisis in Credibility" and "Operation Enlightenment." He is a former associate editor of the Northern Star.
Eldon Anderson (59-60 Star business manager) lives in Sandwich, Ill.
Richard Nelson (Star editor 59-60) is self-employed as a consultant
in graduate medical education in Chicago. He was Northern Star editor in
1958-59, and editor of the Northern yearbook in 1961. In 1961, he graduated
as the just second person to receive an NIU journalism degree. He later
received a PhD. From the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Chuck Shriver received the Donald R. Grubb Distinguished Alumni Award at the 2003 NIU Journalism Banquet. Chuck retired this year after 15 years as night news editor for the Daily Herald. Previously, he was public relations director for both the Chicago Cubs (1967-76) and White Sox (1980-84). He also worked in various capacities for the Chicago Sting, the Chicago Hustle and the San Diego Sails. While with the Cubs, Chuck worked closely with play-by-play legend Jack Brickhouse. And, his White Sox years included the infamous "Disco Demolition Night." This year's award was Chuck's second such honor from NIU; the first came in 1985.
Barry Schrader is group leader for Community Relations at Lawrence Livermore Lab in Livermore, Calif. Previously, he spent 21 years as public information officer for Sandia National Labs, also in Livermore. This followed a 17-year newspaper career in Illinois and California.
Joe Distelheim retired Sept. 1, 2002, after 40 years in the newspaper business. Joe was editor of the Huntsville (Ala.) Times, and was elected to the Northern Star Hall of Fame in 2002. He and his wife, Dottie, continue to live in Huntsville.
Carol (Przepiorka-Cain) Hughes is Public Information Officer for Scottsdale (Ariz.) Unified School District. She handles FOIA requests, lobbies at the Arizona Capitol on behalf of public education and serves on the Superintendent's Administrative Council; communication duties include the district's Web site, parent e-newsletters and employee e-newsletters. Carol also is an elected Democratic Precinct Committeeman. She lives in Phoenix.
Mark Gould is director of the public information office at the American Library Association, in downtown Chicago. ALA has 65,000 members. Mark runs a department with eight employees who focus on media relations, public education, and advocacy. They promote the value of libraries and librarians in the 21st century. Mark also is the proud father of two sons, Ben, 13, and Alex, 11. The family lives in Skokie.

Mary Dieter is press secretary and communications director for Gov. Frank O'Bannon of Indiana. She worked 22 years as a professional reporter, including 19 at The Courier-Journal of Louisville. She then "went corporate" for two years before landing her current job in May 2001. She is married to Tim McClure and they have a 13-year-old daughter, Amelia. The family lives in Zionsville, Ind. The move came after 10 years as Times City Editor and nearly 20 years on city desks in Moline, Indianapolis and Davenport. Mark also was elected board chairman of the Mid-America Press Institute. He was the Northern Star editor in 1980 and editorial page editor in 1979.
Jim Slonoff, publisher of The Doings in Hinsdale, has become the 129th president of the Illinois Press Association (IPA).
Phil Jurik moved to the Chicago Tribune in January 2003, working in Schaumburg as a deputy bureau chief. Phil had spent the previous 12 years at the Daily Southtown, where he was sports editor.

He oversees the paper's coverage of state, city and county government. Terry's new job comes after three years as statehouse bureau chief in Indianapolis for The Times of Northwest Indiana. Before joining The Times in 1999, he spent 16 years with Copley Newspapers, including 10 years at Copley's Chicago Regional Bureau. He also is past president of the NIU Alumni Association.

He currently is working on a science-fiction novel, ``DisIntegration,'' and will publish a paranormal book by a religious channeler, ``The New Revelations,'' this summer. Dave Fornell married Stephanie Batroni of Danville in September 2002. There's much more to that story, however. Dave and Stephanie had been together for about eight years. To save Stephanie months of worrying, Dave says, he devised a surprise wedding which she found out about 24 hours before the ceremony. A reporter for the Reporter-Progress Newspapers in Downers Grove, he told her he was working on a story about someone who had been arrested for Internet child porn, and that he needed to get the guy's court records - thus tricking Stephanie into going with him to the courthouse to get a marriage license. "Things worked out great and everything was organized without her knowing," Dave says.

This past year, Kay won several state awards and one first-place national writing award for a series she wrote about a young widow who taught herself to farm her husband's ground after he died. The Times also sent Kay to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to do a series about Quad-City area Army Reserve soldiers who were sent to Camp X-Ray to guard accused terrorists last year.

Jonathan Lampe ('98) and Melissa (Wirtz) Lampe ('97) welcomed their second child, Patrick Ryan, in April. Patrick joins big brother Nathan. Also, Melissa was elected to a three-year term on the Stoughton (Wis.) City Council. The former city reporter won both the primary and the general election by a 2-1 margin over her nearest challenger. At the Northern Star, Jonathan was systems manager and Melissa was a reporter.
Steve Bailey is an advertising production supervisor for Quill Corporation, Lincolnshire, Ill. He was married June 28, to Joanne Sheeman, who just graduated from NIU with a B.S. in business management. The couple honeymooned in Riviera Maya, Mexico, and will live in Schaumburg.

Darl Larsen is assistant professor of theatre and media arts at Brigham Young University. He wrote a short story which has been made into a short film called "The Snell Show." The film premiered at the Slamdance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, and appeared at the HBO Comedy Festival in Aspen and at the Calgary Film Fest. Bill Tynan has been hired as an officer by the St. Charles Police Department. This spring, he attended 11 weeks of training at the Suburban Law Enforcement Academy in Glen Ellyn. After graduating from the academy June 20, he will enter a 14-week training program with the St. Charles Police Department. Bill says his interest in police work started when, as a Kane County Chronicle reporter, he did a couple of police ride-alongs. Then, in 2001, he participated in the St. Charles department's Citizen Police Academy, an eight-week course designed to show the average citizen the inner workings of the department. The rest is law-enforcement history. Bill lives in Carol Stream, but will move to Naperville in July.

Hank Brockett is a reporter for the Braidwood (Ill.) Journal. The paper always does an April 1 parody story. This year, Hank wrote about a reality TV show for the Outdoors Channel being filmed on a lake near there. The story was bylined "Josh Bluff." A tongue-in-cheek sidebar welcomed Josh as a new correspondent, saying he'd written for the Chicago Cubs' Vineline publication, along with Cat Fancy for Teens and El Pueblo del Fuego. Then, the Illinois Press Association's Presslines newspaper, in its April 15 edition, ran a short item stating that Josh Bluff had been hired as a correspondent for the Braidwood Journal. It even mentioned Bluff's previous experience: Vineline, El Pueblo del Fuego and, yes, Cat Fancy for Teens. The Journal sent a letter of explanation to the IPA.
