Star's mentoring program grows in size and scope By Maria Krull
The Star's mentoring program is 3 years old and 28 active members strong! Most of the mentors are in sales, accounting, consulting, creative and management, but the program is young and can be extended to include other paths.
The program has been great for the students who have had the opportunity to participate. It has facilitated career choices, and in some cases has opened doors for internships and jobs.
Our first meeting of the year took place Friday, Oct. 2, in Chicago. Kelly Kniewel and Zach Smith organized the event and made it possible for our advertising sales students to meet their mentors. The students brought their resumes and many, many questions regarding careers in various industries.
It was great to see the alumni take the "young ones" under their wings and to see the change in roles for some of the participants. Grace Parker and Eric Rajewski participated last year as students; this year they are mentors and quite eager to assist our students.
Another interesting phenomenon that has grown from the program is the network, both on professional and personal levels, that has developed among the mentors.
Thank you Kelly, Zach and all of you mentors for your time, dedication and generosity. You remain an integral part of the Northern Star.EDITOR'S NOTE: Mentoring also is alive on the Star's news side, but a formal program has thus far been difficult because of conflicting schedules and heavy student work loads. We'll keep you posted.
