Student Advisory Committee attempting to fill empty seats

Editor’s Note: This article is a continuation of Tuesday’s story concerning Student Advisory Committee representation. The article discussed reasons why colleges at NIU had not yet named representatives.

The Student Advisory Committees are in the process of filling empty seats with representatives on University Council.

As of Oct. 10, Donna Mathesius, administrative assistant to University Council, said her records indicate that only the Student Advisory Committee for the College of Health and Human Sciences has a representative.

As previously reported in the Northern Star, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the College of Engineering and Engineering Technology and the College of Business are currently in the process of finding SAC representatives for University Council.

The College of Visual and Performing Arts is in the process of trying to find a representative with the time for University Council, said Harold Kafer, Dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts.

Because of the nature of the Visual and Performing Arts curriculum, the 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday time for University Council is often an issue for students, Kafer said. Rehearsal blocks, set construction time and ensemble time often occur at the same time as University Council, making for a large percentage of students in the college being unavailable to attend, Kafer said.

Schedule changes during the second semester can change time availability and can make it difficult for students to attend University Council, Kafer said.
It is not uncommon for a representative to be found immediately, but it doesn’t always turn out that way, Kafer said.

The College of Law usually sends the president of The Student Bar Association as the SAC representative on University Council, said Leonard Mandell, associate dean of Student Services of the College of Law. If the SBA President is unable to attend, he or she finds a representative to go in place, Mandell said.

In Mandell’s 25 years at NIU, he has received a call every year from University Council regarding a representative, he said. However, he didn’t receive the call this year and was reminded by reading a story in the Northern Star about the September University Council meeting, he said. He is currently in the process of contacting the SBA President about the position, he said.

According to the University Council records, the SAC representative from the College of Law attended five of eight meetings for the 2006-2007 and had the second highest attendance performance of all representatives.

In the past, the College of Law has had good attendance at University Council and has always named a representative, Mandell said. In some years, the College of Law sent two representatives to fill an additional open position, he said.

The College of Education was unable to be reached for comment.
