'Halloween' - AFI
By TONY MARTIN

The Misfits are only a half-decent band with a handful of bearable songs.

Today’s track is a cover of one of their best, “Halloween.”

Davey Havok, before becoming the fifth member of “Sex and the City,” used to be a shaved-head guy whose haunting voice drove AFI.

The cover itself can be found on AFI’s remarkable “All Hallows” EP, one of the best things they’ve ever done. “Halloween” is classic Misfits with loads of dark imagery about the scariest time of the year – unless you count Easter.

In a time where bad puns (Alkaline Trio) can sell records, AFI’s early EP stands out as a legitimate source of brooding, dark punk, a style of music filled with loads of mediocre bands ripping off the Misfits.

At least AFI gives them their due on this track, instead of co-opting their entire style and repackaging it as their own.

AFI has always been a band obsessed with the dark side of things, which makes this cover twice as creepy.

This song is a must-have for any Halloween mix tape, and should be played no less than four times in DeKalb at all Halloween concerts.
