Visitors to Elgin Turner’s Haunted Hall, 112 Villa St., will trek up three flights of dimly-lit stairs to reach the beginning of the course on the hall’s third floor.

“Everything’s inside,” said Murray McGough, vice president of the Elgin Turner Association. “For the most part it’s pitch black and pretty scary. We have it set up so things just kind of jump out at you or will be on the ground moving.”

Elgin Turner’s Haunted Hall has been operating every October for the past 12 years. Last year, it was voted one of the area’s best, McGough said. He said the structure dates back to the 1800s.

“Some consider it haunted,” McGough said. “The hall used to be a school in the 1800s. There have been tales of people hearing voices and the sounds of children playing up in the gym.”

Hours of operation are 7 p.m. to midnight Oct. 26 and 27 and 7 to 10:30 p.m. Oct. 28 and 31. Cost of admission is $9.

“The biggest thing that makes it unique here is the ride we have in it,” McGough said. “As far as scary, the building itself is kind of strange looking.”

The course takes about 15 to 20 minutes to complete.

“We’ve had all types of age groups go through already,” McGough said.
Snacks and grill items will be available for purchase, as will drinks at the hall’s full-service bar.
