The student population at University Council was noticeably higher Wednesday.

“Right in front of me, I see a full contingent of students,” NIU president John Peters said. “This reminds me of my Political Science 100 class.”

With nine student representatives in attendance, the student body received more than half its entitled representation on the council. Seven of the eight appointed representatives from the Student Association and two of the eight representatives from the colleges attended.

Student representatives had an average attendance at meetings of 3.625 reps, according to the UC agenda records for 2006-2007. Seven students presented the highest presence at University Council in 2006-2007, according to UC attendance records.

Currently, all eight SA representatives have been named, along with 10 alternates, according to SA records. The SA had only six representatives named by the time of the October meeting, according to UC records.

The graduate and engineering and engineering technology schools have both named representatives, according to the UC records.

The law school had a student representative present at the meeting, though she is not listed as an official member in the records, said Donna Mathesius, administrative assistant for UC.

Mathesius’ records show that only 10 student members were named as representatives for the 2006-07 academic year, she said.

SA representative Jason Looney was the alternate at the meeting for SA president Jarvis Purnell, Looney said.
