Power restored to Evergreen Village
Some NIU personnel to receive pay raise

A campus organization is creating local and global awareness of hunger and poverty.
The NIU chapter of Bread For The World started last year on the strength of two seniors who traveled to Washington, D.C., for a national conference.
“They wanted to carry on the group after they had graduated,” said Elizabeth DeAvilla, senior nutrition and dietetic major and current president of the organization. “We got the group together last year, and this year we were recognized [by the Student Association].”
Members are currently organizing the “Food Stamp Challenge,” an event that will take place toward the semester’s end. The event calls for people to live on $3 a day, $1 per meal, said Cassandra Jaros, senior nutrition and dietetic major and secretary of the organization.
“We would like people to know what it really is like to live on the amount of money that the government is currently providing people in the program,” DeAvilla said.
The organization is participating in “Offering of Letters,” an event that will allow for letters to be written to the local government asking for needed changes in the legislation, DeAvilla said.
Meetings take place at 11:30 a.m. on the third Thursday of each month in Wirtz Hall, Room 113.
“We would love for more people to come to our meetings and learn more about the organization, as well as our local group,” DeAvilla said. “We really want this to be a successful group, since we cover many important causes.”
