Animals still available for adoption at TAILS
By SAM BRUNELL

It has been nearly one month since about 500 animals, 200 dead and 300 alive, were found at a house in Rochelle.

“It is definitely one of the largest cases in northern Illinois,” said Beth Drake, executive director of TAILS. “It could possibly even be the largest.”

Out of the 163 cats, 60 still are available for adoption. A handful are not yet eligible for the adoption process due to health reasons and are being held at TAILS Humane Society, 2250 Barber Greene Road.

Out of the 116 dogs, 10 are in foster homes because they are still frightened after the ordeal, Drake said.

Sixteen dogs went to their specific breed rescue because of special needs, and 12 are in other foster homes because of health reasons. With the exception of four dogs, the remainder have been adopted. The four remaining dogs are pending adoption.

“They needed to get in homes quickly because they were in need of love and attention,” Drake said. “It is always better to get them in a loving home as soon as possible rather them being stuck at rescues and shelters.”

The 31 birds found in the house that were being held at a bird rescue are currently being cared for at TAILS and are pending adoption.

Interested in adopting?
TAILS allows people to visit with their animal of interest.

Once an animal is wanted for adoption, TAILS will have the potential owner fill out a survey regarding background information.

If living in a rented apartment, a copy of the lease or the landlord’s direct number must be present so TAILS can verify the complex allows animals and if there are any restrictions.

TAILS has no restrictions for adopting families, fenced in backyards are not required.

Once approved, the person and TAILS have a legal binding contract.
Information provided by shelter manager Christy Boecker.

TAILS is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from noon to 6 p.m., as well as Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.
