Track of the Day
By TONY MARTIN

“Providence by Gas Light” — Daughters

“Providence by Gas Light,” the sixth track of Daughters’ phenomenal second full-length, “Hell Songs,” is possibly one of the best songs the noise band from Rhode Island has written.

Since the album was such a dramatic change from its predecessors, the group lost a lot of fans and this album didn’t do as well as it should have. However, it remains a favorite of mine.

Its aggressive instrumentation paves the way for heavily distorted finger-tapping. The breakneck speed of the guitars is matched by the furious drumming and slowly crooned lyrics that paint a chaotic picture. When the horns come in at the end, you might wonder what you were thinking by not already owning this brilliant album.
