A new chemistry class will be available to students next semester.

CHEM 100 will cover chemistry in everyday life, said Shannon Gates, coordinator for recruitment and public relations for the department of chemistry and biochemistry.

Students in the class will find they won’t have to deal with as much math as other chemistry classes, but rather how chemistry exists in their everyday lives, Gates said.

Gates said she feels the class is best suited for students needing a science class for general education credit.

“If students need a science class to fill up their requirement, this a good class for them, especially if they need a class that’s not asked for their major,” she said.

Areas to be covered in CHEM 100 include water consumption, pollution and global warming, among other things, Gates said.

Junior geology major Andrew Armstrong said he feels the class is a great addition for students needing to fill general education requirements.

“It sounds like a great introductory class for chemistry and it would be a great class for non-science majors,” he said.

CHEM 100 will meet in Faraday Hall, Room 143 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students that have already taken CHEM 110 or CHEM 210 will not be eligible to take the class.
