'Hairspray: The Soundtrack' makes listeners tap their feet
By LINDSEY KASTNING

“Hairspray: The Soundtrack” has sold more than 500,000 copies in the U.S, since its July 10 release and has 19 songs worth listening to.

With tracks such as “Ladies’ Choice,” performed by the 2006 “High School Musical” star Zac Efron, and “Big, Blonde and Beautiful,” sung by Queen Latifah, the album has a song for everyone and features a range of genres, from soul to rock ‘n’ roll.

When listening to the first track on the album, “Good Morning Baltimore,” it is hard to believe that lead singer Nikki Blonskey was found at a Cold Stone Creamery ice cream shop. Her voice is strong and carries a contagious swing.

The pairing of Blonskey with John Travolta helps produce an album for all generations. From songs that create laughter (“Mama, I’m a Big Girl Now”) to songs that touch the heart (“Come So Far”), the album has a wealth of emotional connection.

The music included on the album, written by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, is a revamping of the 1988 original film. The wide range of genres also includes pop music to add a new twist to album, which conforms to the 1962 setting of the film.

Also featuring Amanda Bynes, from Nickelodeon’s television show “The Amanda Show,” and Michelle Pfeiffer, the vocal talent of several familiar stars makes the album unique.
