Students can help spread holiday cheer by donating unwrapped toys to Safe Passage, a shelter for victims of domestic violence.

The toy drive was set up by employees in the Building Services Department, said NIU secretary Megan Krok.

The employees spearheaded the drive to help spread happiness during the holiday season, she said.

Toys for Tots, a national charity organization, already donates to Safe Passage children younger than 12, so the campus toy drive hopes to receive more items for the 13- to 18-year-old range, said Nancy Brown, an organizer for the event.

“Though the drive is targeting the 13- to 18-year-old range, we are opening it up to all ages,” Brown said.

Items needed by the shelter include gift cards, movie tickets, books, jewelry and clothing for teenagers, along with restaurant gift cards, clothing, and pampering items for adults.

Brown said students are also encouraged to bring gift wrapping materials so children and parents may get involved in the gift-giving process.

The unwrapped gifts will be on display for children and parents to choose which item will best suit their loved ones.

“This allows them to play an active role in being a part of Christmas,” Brown said.

Students who donate to Safe Passage have the option to donate anonymously, but may be recognized for the gift by attaching their names to a separate piece of paper.

“[The employees] are trying to help every child have a better Christmas and a more joyful season,” said volunteer Darla Roach, who helps wherever she is needed.
