Bethany Road could extend to Route 38 if the NIU Board of Trustees approves a recommendation to grant easement to DeKalb.

The university will recommend to the BOT on Thursday to grant a permanent easement to the DeKalb Township Road District to build the road extension.

With the extension of Bethany Road to Twombly Road completed, the southbound extension would complete the roadway to Route 38.

The university would give up the land in exchange for a roadway in the easement, said Faculty Senate President Paul Stoddard. The city would build the road, but the university would still own the land, he said.

“This important completion of Bethany Road to Route 38 will allow the university to connect new roads and infrastructure which will provide a complete transportation system needed for the future development of the Far West Campus,” according to the BOT agenda.

The BOT agenda also stated easements would be granted to Commonwealth Edison, NICOR and Verizon in the roadway easement.

“[The extension] will help us access the land out there,” Stoddard said.

Currently, the road extension is to be graded during Summer 2008 and paved Summer 2009, according to the BOT agenda for Dec. 5.
