NIU guard Ryan Paradise has called it a career.
The senior decided it was the right decision after dealing with injuries during most of his time as a Huskie.
Paradise suffered a broken nose on Nov. 24, 2007, and hasn’t played in a game since.
“I hurt physically and am just no longer able to put my body through the pain to continue the game I love,” Paradise wrote in his ‘Another Day in Paradise’ blog on NIUHuskies.com. “It’s been a very tough decision process for me personally and I know I will always wish things would have been different, but I have thought about this every day since I have been out with the broken nose and I know deep down it is the right decision for me.”
Paradise also ended his academic career at NIU last semester. The senior graduated in December with a degree in corporate communication.
The coaching shuffle
Former NIU running backs coach Chris Beatty has accepted the same position at West Virginia. The position opened after former running backs coach and offensive coordinator Calvin Magee went with Rich Rodriguez to Michigan.
Beatty served as NIU’s running backs coach for just one season. Prior to being at NIU, the running backs coach was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Hampton.
Scott Shafer, who was the defensive coordinator at NIU from 2000-2003 and was also the defensive backs coach from 1996-2003, is heading to Michigan. The coach will take on the same role at Ann Arbor. Shafer was the defensive coordinator at Stanford in 2007.
Former NIU offensive line coach Harold Etheridge has accepted the same position at Washington St.
Etheridge was with the Huskies for just one season, where he coached All-MAC tackle John Brost. Etheridge was the offensive line coach at North Texas prior to his time in DeKalb.
Successfully on track
The NIU track team won six events at the Badger Track Classic Saturday. Senior Coretta Evans won the 200m in 25.15 seconds.
In addition to Evans’ win, Jessica Statler (high jump), Brittany Houghton (long jump), Shoshanna Brown (triple-jump) and Carolyn Vasquez (800m dash) also won their events.
