NIU names new head coach for women's soccer
Carrie Barker was named the new NIU head women’s soccer coach Thursday.
Barker takes over for Marci Miller-Jobson, who headed the program for three seasons before leaving for Baylor Dec. 6. The team had been without a permanent head coach since Jobson’s departure.
“I’m extremely excited for this opportunity that [NIU athletic director] Jim Phillips has given me,” Barker said. “I’m looking forward to putting my heart and soul into this program.”
Barker served as an assistant coach at Michigan (1997-2003) and Wisconsin (2004-2006).
While at Wisconsin, her alma mater, she helped coach the Badgers to two NCAA Tournament appearances. Barker reached the NCAA Tournament seven consecutive seasons with the Wolverines, winning the Big Ten Championship twice.
NIU is the perfect fit for Barker, she said.
“When I stepped on the campus, right away I knew it was the place for me,” she said. “[After] meeting the players and the sports staff, everything just feels right.”
Barker is looking forward to getting right to work in her new position.
“Right now, I’m focusing on getting into the program and evaluating the strengths and weaknesses,” Barker said. “My goal is to win a championship, and I’ll do whatever it takes to win. My philosophy is to work hard, dedicate yourself and make improvements weekly.”
Barker met the team briefly and said she sees a lot of energy and excitement in her new players.
“I’m extremely excited to start my career as a head coach at NIU,” Barker said. “There have been drastic changes in the last three to four years here, and I see the tools there to be successful at NIU.”
