Volleyball looking to prevent DePaul's first win
By ANDY PRUSKI

While there is a first time for everything, the NIU volleyball team hopes to avoid that saying tonight when it takes on a DePaul team still looking for its first win of the season.

The Huskies (3-4) host the Blue Demons (0-5) as the two rivals square off at 7 p.m. on Victor E. Court.

Not only is DePaul 0-5 on the season, it has lost 15-straight games.

While Depaul may be struggling, NIU coach Ray Gooden has no intention of taking the Blue Demons lighlty.

“They are young, but are going to be a very good team,” Gooden said. “They are also hungry for their first win which gives them more motivation.”

The Blue Demons young roster features eight freshmen, one of which is leading the team in kills. Outside hitter Charla Drabant is averaging just over 10 kills per match.
Much like NIU’s style of play, Depaul runs a fast-paced offense which should keep NIU’s defense busy.

“Both of us try and run an upbeat offense,” Gooden said. “Defense is one of our staples though.”

The Huskies defense is coming off one of their most solid performances of the year against Butler where they combined for 102 digs.

Freshman libero Maddie Hughes led the Huskies with 26 digs in that match.

NIU also had four members with double-digit kills against Butler, which is something Gooden would like to see more of.

“We had really good balance that game,” Gooden said. “With our group consistency is the key and everyone made positive strides that game.”
