Voting the best way to make a difference

The most efficient way to change the status quo is to vote.

Many college students are disappointed with the current president, George W. Bush, and his administration. This fact is evident by increasingly common Facebook groups such as “Bush Sucks” or “Impeach Bush.”

Anyone can sit on their couch and express their disenchantment with the U.S. government. Voting, however, is the only way to turn those thoughts into reality.

The word “voting” does not mean joining Facebook groups such as “One Million Strong for Barack Obama,” nor does it mean adding a politician to your friend list on MySpace (even if he or she does leave a comment on your page).

Voting means registering and going to your local polling place to cast your vote for a person who may, at some point, affect your future.

Discussing who was eliminated on last week’s episode of “I Love New York” or pondering whether or not Lauren “L.C.” Conrad will get back together with her boyfriend Jason on “The Hills” will not matter in the long run.

What does matter, however, are the laws and policies that our peers are putting into effect in Springfield and Washington, D.C.

Our generation has the power to change the face of government in one of the world’s most powerful nations.

Why not put that power to good use?
