Springlike temperatures teased DeKalb on Tuesday before winter returned.

NIU staff meteorologist Gilbert Sebenste said the warm-up was caused by a strong low-pressure system that came through and brought intense south winds and mild air. The warm temperature change is not normal for this time of year, but it’s not a record, he said.

Sebenste said that a cold front came through and brought freezing rain that changed to snow later yesterday evening.

“Since 2 p.m. on Tuesday, the temperature was falling from 47 degrees to 26 degrees late afernoon and [to] five below zero at night,” Sebenste said.

Shyla Seward, a junior psychology major, said that the warm weather Tuesday did not change her mind on winter.

“I was upset about it because I don’t like this snowy weather and besides the rain, it was nice to me,” she said.

Sebenste advises students to dress warmly for weather conditions later this week.

“Students should bundle up with multiple layers of clothes,” Sebenste said.
Seward said she was prepared for the sudden weather change.

“It’s still winter technically, but [the weather’s] not teasing me because it is still winter,” Seward said. “I wasn’t cold [Tuesday] because I wore my big winter coat.”

The weather today will bring a breezy morning, with 10 to 15 degrees as a high and with wind chills below zero all day, Sebenste said. Weekend temperatures will be warmer, he added.
