Melting snow contributes to increased chance of flooding
By JOHN BACHMANN

A lot of snow equals a lot of water - which equals a chance for flooding.

With the recent weather change, the snow that accumulated in the past week is beginning to melt, which might cause flooding in some parts of DeKalb.

Gilbert Sebenste, NIU staff meteorologist, said for most of DeKalb, flooding from the snow melting is not an issue.

"We're protected by dikes and have creeks and rivers that are generally low, which helps lower the chances of flooding here," he said.

Rick Monas, DeKalb public works director, agreed with Sebenste.

"The river levels are low and won't cause any flooding," he said

Monas said because of this, there is no need to have any preparation for flooding from the snow melting.

If flooding were to occur, it would be caused by ice jams from the rivers.

"Despite ice jams creating a problem, water typically flows under or over them," Sebsente said.

The southern part of DeKalb is the area that would be most affected from flooding, he said.

"The southern part of Taylor Street is the most unprotected area in DeKalb. And the people that live there should take the necessary precautions from preventing any possible chances of flooding," he said.
