Bulls win first MAC contest, Huskies lose 89-81
Prior to Tuesday night’s game, some said the Buffalo men’s basketball were the “defeat–a–Bulls.”
But after an 89–81 win over the Huskies, the Buffalo Bulls won their first MAC contest and broke a 19-road-game losing–streak.
Buffalo has dropped every away game since its last road win against Temple on Nov. 27, 2006. In an attempt to get the monkey off its back, junior Andy Robinson and the Bulls came out to win.
“We wanted to get a win,” Robinson said. “This game showed that we can play confident and we can play in the MAC. We want to play to get wins and play together as a team.”
The Bulls also came out to grab their first win in conference play. Buffalo was the only team in the MAC without a conference win until Tuesday night.
“The biggest thing is getting the MAC road win,” Buffalo coach Reggie Witherspoon said. “But whenever you go through that, people start giving you suggestions on ‘Why don’t you change this or change that,’ but that is something you have to resist.”
The Bulls resisted change and stayed focused and determined to win, Witherspoon said.
NIU head coach Ricardo Patton said the Bulls outplayed the Huskies both offensively and defensively. Despite its losing MAC record, the team fought to win, he said.
“I don’t know that anyone didn’t know that Buffalo was an 0-8 team in our conference,” Patton said. “They played as well offensively as any other team we have played.”
Huskie forward Shaun Logan said the team needs to stick together on the court after Tuesday night’s loss. Logan believes the team needs to continue to play hard and work together on the court.
“The team is upset about the loss,” Logan said. “But we all know we have to keep fighting and working, and hopefully we can win.”
