Six week jazz class offered by Recreation Services
By MICHELLE GIBBONS

So, you think you can dance?

Recreation Services is offering six weeks of “All Jazzed Up” dance classes, open to all students and Rec members, starting Tuesday, Feb. 19.

Taught by professional dance instructor Julie Haller, the class will give people the opportunity to enhance their movement skills through a variety of jazz dance forms including funk, lyrical, hip-hop and more, said Becky Lewis, assistant director of fitness, wellness and marketing for Recreation Services.

Classes run on Tuesdays from 7 to 8:15 p.m. at the Campus Recreation Center.
The class was initiated due to the popularity of the hit show, “Dancing with the Stars” and “So You Think You Can Dance,” in addition to providing a fun and excellent form of exercise, Lewis said.

“We wanted to provide the students and our members with a new and different way to exercise that is both ‘hot’ right now and fun,” she said.

A free Jam Session to try the class will be offered from 7 to 8:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 12 in Activity Room 2 at the Rec. No registration is required for the Jam Session.

New combinations and techniques will be taught each week and put to contemporary music, Lewis said. No dance partner is required.

Haller, a dancer, instructor and choreographer, said she will be teaching different dance styles each week from a technical dance format.

Haller said students could enjoy having a place where they can listen to the latest music, add their own style into dance sequences and not have to travel far for a structured dance class.

“With all the latest dance shows that are out there, people really enjoy adding their own style within dance combinations,” she said. “My class allows that freedom for students to express their own style.”
