Ben Gross: You know what I did with my snow day?
Andy Pruski: Snow angels in the Northern Star parking lot?
BG: Well, besides that. I was following the college football recruiting online.
AP: Boy, that cold weather must have went to your head. Doing research for one of your “physics of” articles must be more exciting than that.
BG: Hey man, I like research. But dude, recruiting day is a big deal. It’s the future of all college programs.
AP: You know what, you’re right, it is a big deal...if you’re Florida, USC or Clemson. Following recruiting for MAC schools is about as exciting as watching the sixth round of the NFL draft.
BG: I admit you don’t get the Tim Tebows or Jimmy Clausens coming to the MAC, but recruiting day is vital. It’s the day when you find out the future of the conference.
AP: OK sports editor, honestly tell me how many names off of the NIU recruiting list you recognize?
BG: Well, there’s Kevin Sabock, the son of former NIU assistant coach Mike Sabock...
AP: Go on...
BG: Okay, there’s the community college kid from Kissimmee, Fla., who’s supposed to have a ton of speed.
AP: Fair enough, Gross, but realistically, unless you went to high school with them or spent your entire snow day researching, you probably don’t know a whole lot about the players coming in. However, that is the point for a small school, finding the diamonds in the rough.
BG: True enough, Pruski. Who knew the name Garrett Wolfe when he was recruited? It wasn’t till that game against Bowling Green in 2004 that Wolfe’s name became a staple. But are you suggesting that the college football fans of the world shouldn’t pay attention to the first Wednesday of February?
AP: I’m suggesting that it’s almost impossible to pay attention, because no one knows the names, at least in the MAC. It’s obviously a big deal for the players, but for the average fan it’s more confusing than anything else.
BG: I’ll agree to that, big guy. Unless college football is your life, signing day seems more like the MLB Draft than the red carpet at the Academy Awards. However, it’s still one of the keys to understanding the direction of the program.
AP: And I’ll agree with that. I’m just a little bitter that I didn’t get a scholarship for kicking. Oh well, guess I better start training for next year.
