Local and professional teams were seen showing support for NIU over the last week.

On the first day of spring training for the White Sox, general manager Kenny Williams and manager Ozzie Guillen wore NIU hats.

“We tried to do something that was tasteful, but showed that we were thinking about NIU,” Scott Reifert, White Sox vice president of communications said. “It seemed like the appropriate thing to do the first day of camp.”

All White Sox players will wear NIU hats during their first spring training game Wednesday, Feb. 27. The hats will be auctioned off after the game and the proceeds will go to the university’s Feb. 14 Student Scholarship Fund.

The Bulls and Blackhawks also showed their support.

The Bulls wore NIU T-shirts during pre-game last Wednesday against the Nets and last Friday against the Nuggets.

“The NIU tragedy stunned and saddened our entire organization and it is only appropriate that we express our concern for the victims and our solidarity with the entire NIU family in this way,” said Steve Schanwald, Chicago Bulls executive vice president of business operations.

The Blackhawks wore NIU decals on their helmets Sunday, Feb. 17, against the Colorado Avalanche; Tuesday, Feb. 19, against the St. Louis Blues; and Wednesday, Feb. 20, against the Minnesota Wild.

DeKalb and Sycamore high schools also showed their support, as both schools wore NIU T-shirts during pre-game warmups for their game Saturday, Feb. 17.
