One-on-one with Bobby Stevens
By DERRICK SMITH

The Huskies are gearing up for baseball as the season comes into view. NIU hopes to continue the success it experienced after going 34-24 last season.

Workouts and drills occupy a lot of time for the players, but one Huskie took time out of his day to talk about things not related to baseball.

The Northern Star caught up with shortstop Bobby Stevens to discuss topics ranging from class work, to music, to his inspiration.

Northern Star: What do you plan to do with your business marketing major?
Bobby Stevens: I’ll just see where it takes me. I’ll probably be doing sales, hopefully something with baseball.

NS: Being named Victory Scholar and Huskie Scholar, how do you manage to keep your GPA up while playing baseball?
BS: It’s all about time management. Just balancing my schoolwork and practice.

NS: Were you always good at time management, or is that something you learned here at NIU?
BS: I was a pretty good student in high school, I would say. I think anyone would say that.

NS: What type of music do you listen to?
BS: Anything but country. That’s all you get in DeKalb, so it’s hard to find music on the radio. I like a lot of Avril Lavigne and old Backstreet Boys. My favorite song is “I Want It That Way.”

NS: Backstreet Boys? Do you get a lot of ribbing from your teammates for listening to them?
BS: No, the whole team likes Backstreet Boys. Pat Minogue is a big fan, too. We’re roommates, so that works out well. We always have some kind of CD playing.

NS: Who inspires you?
BS: My dad. He was my coach all the way up through high school. I always wanted to be like him. I wear 11 because of him. There are no famous people I look up to more than my dad.

NS: Anything else interesting you would like to add?
BS: I’m not cutting my hair or shaving until we lose a series. If you see me walking around looking like Grizzly Adams, that’s just because we keep winning.
