Award nominations for individuals who make exceptional contributions toward women’s issues are now being accepted. The Presidential Commission on the Status of Women, a group concerned with about women’s issues on campus, is honoring both students and NIU employees with four awards.

“Awards that students can win are the Outstanding Women Student Awards and the Martha D. Cooper Journalism Award,” said Virginia Cassidy, associate vice provost of the Academic Planning and Development Department. “Awards specifically for NIU employees include the Wilma D. Stricklin Award, the Outstanding Mentor Award and Women Who Make a Difference Award.”

Cassidy encourages those who wish to nominate an individual for an award to submit a letter of recommendation to Betty Baugh at the Women’s Resource Center.

“Nomination letters should address the criteria for the award and explain how the nominee meets that criteria,” Cassidy said. “Also, two other supporters must submit letters of recommendation in order for the individual to be considered a nominee.”

According to Baugh, administrative secretary of the Women’s Resource Center, individuals who win an award will receive a plaque.

“The winner of the Martha D. Cooper Journalism award will also receive a $500 monetary award,” Baugh said.

Cassidy said the benefits of receiving an award include positive resumé building and playing a positive role in NIU employee evaluations. Cassidy said the most important part of the award is that it allows faculty and staff to know the university appreciates their efforts.
