Rathindra Bose, vice president for research and dean of NIU’s graduate school, will transfer to Ohio University on June 1.

Bose said he will run the university’s new graduate college, and he will serve as their vice president for research and creative activity.

“Every college runs their own graduate program,” Bose said. “They wanted to create a centralized college, so all students would go to the same college, regardless of their disciplines.”

Bose said Ohio University’s research in economic development attracted him to the college. Bose said that his decision to transfer was not influenced in any way by the Feb. 14 shootings.

“I am not leaving because of any crises. The timing is wrong,” Bose said. “They started this process back in July 2007. I am deeply sorry about everything that has happened.”

According to Northern Today, Bose helped develop the Institute for Nanoscience, Engineering and Technology. His relationship with Argonne National Laboratory, a U.S. Department of Energy research center, led to the creation of a Ph.D. program in nanoscience and engineering at NIU.

Also, while serving as vice president at NIU, Bose said he increased the external funding for research and sponsored programs increased from $45 million to $61 million. However, Bose added that he is not solely responsible for the fundraising.

“You need all of your colleagues and faculty to help you to get there,” Bose said.
