For a second season, NIU running back Montell Clanton appears to be done for the year.

“He’s out; I think we lost him for the year,” NIU head coach Joe Novak said. “It’s too bad. I feel worse for Montell.”

Early reports say Clanton suffered a torn right ACL. Before the injury, the junior set a career mark with a 59-yard touchdown run. His old record was a 58-yard touchdown run last season against Buffalo.

The Rockford native missed 10 games last year after he injured his left meniscus in the game against the Bulls. The meniscus is located in the knee.

NIU middle linebacker Tim McCarthy also suffered a knee injury. The junior left the game with an injury to his MCL in his right leg.

The Huskies will wait to find out the extent of the injury, as McCarthy will undergo an MRI. However it is expected that he will miss several games.

“All I was told that he had an MCL and that he wasn’t going to be able to play the rest of this game,” Novak said. “I’m sure he’s going to be out for a while. How long, I don’t know.”

McCarthy, a team captain, has recorded over 100 tackles in both his freshman and sophomore years.

NIU was also without linebacker Cory Hanson. The redshirt sophomore’s status was questionable before the game against SIU as Novak said he took a big hit in the game against Iowa.

Hanson was not listed as available before the start of the game.
