In the Wednesday issue of the Northern Star, readers could find an editorial from the Northern Star Editorial Board describing the “distasteful and even inappropriate” decision to have Soulja Boy to perform on campus, especially during Women’s History Month. While I completely agree with this editorial, perhaps those at the Northern Star should turn an eye to their own content, as well.
Tuesday’s comic “Microbabies and Friend,” created by Joe Jorgenson, contained references that should be just as offensive as many of the lyrics of these songs. In this comic, a father discusses his teenage daughter with a friend, describing a “weird guy [his] age” that has been buying clothing and a Web cam for her. The friend then points out how much money this “weird guy” is saving the father, to which he replies, “That’s true. I just hope he coughs up that $500 when the time comes.”
Apparently, Mr. Jorgenson finds child prostitution by a parent to be a punchline rather than the serious issue that it is. As the Editorial Board has pointed out, March is Women’s History Month. As such, I would hope that more attention would be paid to these issues, not just in campus events, but also in the content presented by the paper.
