DeKalb offers some options for vegetarians.

Since there is little to eat in the residence halls for vegetarians, many students venture out to local restaurants.

Stephanie Clark, a senior psychology major and officer in NIU’s Vegetarian Education Group (VEG), said that even though options are sparse, there are places vegetarians can go for a meal.

“As far as eating around DeKalb, Eduardo’s has amazing options for vegetarians,” Clark said. “They offer vegetarian TVP [Texture Vegetable Protein] ‘chicken’ for their tacos and taco salads.”

Besides Eduardo’s, there are also a few other places to eat around DeKalb for vegetarians.

“Thai Pavilion is also a great choice, since tofu may be substituted for meat in any dish,” Clark said. “Pita Pete’s has delicious falafel and hummus pitas.”

Candice Hill, music graduate student, goes to a wide variety of restaurants to eat vegetarian.

“I like Panera Bread,” Hill said. “I usually get Caesar salad, or a bagel or other pastry or their vegetarian black bean soup.”

Clark also enjoys some of the vegetarian options at Fatty’s Pub and Grille.

“I like Fatty’s. They have grilled cheese with tomatoes, minus the bacon, and they also have this Bavarian sandwich that is vegetarian,” Clark said.

Clark eats a lot of vegetarian pizza, but she said that is available at any pizza place.

Emily Ericson, senior English major, said O’Leary’s Irish Pub and Grill has a lot of options for vegetarians.

“I will eat at O’Leary’s. as they have a nice selection of healthy eats and vegetarian options,” Ericson said. “I really like the veggie wrap and the sautéed veggies.”

Clark said the newest place around campus to eat is Jaipur, which offers Indian cuisine and a variety of foods for vegetarians.
