Track of the Day: “Detlef Schrempf” - Band of Horses
From the album, “Cease to Begin” (2007)

“Detlef Schrempf” is a truly entrancing song that can take many different meanings in the hearts and minds of its listeners.

With the puzzling title named after the former basketball player for the Seattle SuperSonics, lyrics such as “The town is gonna talk, but these people do not” and “Eyes can’t look at you any other way” could make people think that the song may be about Schrempf’s move from the Indiana Pacers to the Supersonics, and the thought that he will always be viewed as a Pacer, despite his four-and-a-half year career in Seattle.

However, I cannot bring myself to believe that such a beautiful song can have such a silly meaning. I instead picture this dreamy song as more about love. When I listen to it, I picture singer/songwriter Ben Bridwell comforting a lover with his soothing tenor voice. I take the lyrics “My eyes can’t look at you any other way” for their literal and hopelessly romantic meaning as he tells her that no matter what troubles she has gone through, he still sees her for the good soul she truly is.

Regardless of the true meaning to the song, in whatever light it is taken, “Detlef Schrempf” is a masterpiece. I will surely be looking out for the next great love ballad on their next album, hopefully entitled “Toni Kukoc” or “John Stockton.”
