Starbusters hosted an experimental evening of comedy Tuesday night.

Bikini Bob Comedy Productions, formed by comedian Nile Dean, took to the stage for purposes of amusement and laughter, and the acts were as diverse as the performers.

Starting the show was character comedian Pops, whose brand of comedy included material of everyday life through the eyes of a confused 54-year-old man. The act received some high laughs with Pop’s line, “You know what I hate? Besides young people with their whole lives ahead of them...”

Following Pops was Matt McGann, who started doing comedy in October 2007. His brand of observational humor hit closer to the tastes of NIU students in the audience, and his dry tone helped add to his performance.

McGann said he owed his success in comedy to his girlfriend, who encouraged to him perform at open mic nights. He joined Bikini Bob Comedy Productions in the same manner as the rest of the group by performing at Walter Payton’s Roundhouse in Aurora.

James Pauletto offered relationship comedy revolving mostly around how men’s lives change when they get into relationships. Pauletto left his audience divided when his jokes went over well with men and left shocked looks on the faces of some women.

Other performers, including Matt Durfke, Dale Rowe, Jim Flannigan and Vince Carone, spoke of their experiences in comedy. Many related how they hoped Bikini Bob would become successful and looked forward to possibly returning to DeKalb.

Dean was thankful to the management at Starbusters.

“I fell in love with it. I couldn’t ask for a better format,” he said. Dean also said he would never perform another venue in DeKalb other than Starbusters, thanks to the management giving the comedians the chance to perform.

Bikini Bob offered a wide selection of comedic styles, but be sure you aren’t easily offended. While these guys can definitely make a person laugh, they are a little raunchy, but overall pretty talented.
