Ideas sought for permanent memorial

By JAMES TSCHIRHART

The newly formed February 14th Memorial Committee is seeking suggestions and ideas from the NIU community for a permanent memorial to be built somewhere on campus.

Michael P. Malone, the NIU Vice President for University Advancement, was chosen as chair of the committee and is soliciting for ideas to bring to the table at their first meeting on Apr. 8.

"The university's ultimate goal is to create a fitting memorial—a special place where people can gather to reflect upon and honor the memory of the victims and to reaffirm the core values of NIU," Malone said in a press release.

The committee is made up of faculty, staff, students, alumni, community members, and supporters of NIU.

However, victims and families of the deceased interested in proposing their ideas for the memorial will bring their ideas to the also newly formed NIU Office of Support and Advocacy, whose representatives will be present in the Memorial Committee to forward these ideas.

"We will review all submitted suggestions, examining their merits and looking for common themes that emerge," Malone said in a press release. "In addition to looking at different types of suggested memorials, we also will examine the merits of potential sites on campus for such a memorial space."

Those in the NIU community interested in proposing their ideas can email them to memorial@niu.edu.
