Rec services provides bike racing competition to students
Students looking to compete in bike racing can make their way over to the Student Recreation Services.
Tour de Kalb allows participants to attend any of the 11 cycling classes offered each week, and each time a participant cycles through a class, they earn 150 miles, said Becky Lewis, assistant director of Recreation Services.
The program began March 25 and runs through April 25, and is in Activity Room 2.
After cycling 700 miles over the course of five classes, the participant’s name is entered into a drawing to win a prize, she said. After 15 classes, the tour is completed.
“The Tour de Kalb is a way to motivate people who want to cycle to come to group cycling classes at the Student Recreation Center,” Lewis said.
The Tour de Kalb is offered to anyone, but a Fit Pass is required.
Forty dollars is required for a cycle–only fit pass; participants can purchase a punch pass for the 15 classes for $35 and for each single class pass purchased is $5.
Lewis said the winners from each level will be announced by April 30.
Mike Alagna, Recreation Services intern, hopes the program will encourage a healthy lifestyle for cyclers.
“This program helps promote a healthy lifestyle and gives some added benefits to motivate the participants to continue attending or to start attending cycle classes,” Alagna said.
Kimberly Botts, a junior English major, said she would participate if she had the time, since she enjoys the exercise of biking.
“I think biking gets you out in nature,” she said. “It’s definitely something that is more enjoyable than running.”
