Saturday’s outing was nothing unusual for NIU’s Adam Holdenrid.
The senior pitcher earned a no-decision while giving up one earned run in 6 1/3 innings in the 3-2 Huskie victory over Kent State. The win gave the Huskies the series victory over the Golden Flashes and set them up for a possible sweep.
Holdenrid was able to out-duel Kent State’s Chris Carpenter, a talented pitcher expected to go in the first few rounds of the 2008 MLB draft.
“I thought Adam threw the ball very well,” NIU head coach Ed Mathey said. “He gave us a chance to win. He was in there throwing strikes.”
Holdenrid has enjoyed a strong senior campaign, sporting a 3-2 record with a 2.31 ERA in six starts. These performances have earned Holdenrid two MAC West pitcher of the week awards this season.
His performances this season, when compared to last season, are like comparing night and day. In his junior season, Holdenrid struggled as he recovered from Tommy John surgery. He finished the year with a 1-3 record and a 6.37 ERA.
“It’s been a pretty long road. Last year was pretty tough,” Holdenrid said. “I had a rough year because I didn’t have a feel for my off-speed pitches.”
With his arm back to full health, Holdenrid has allowed three earned runs or fewer in each of his starts this season. This has led him to a 1-1 record and a 1.66 ERA in conference play.
