Huskies look to UI-C victory tonight

Still bitter over a loss to DePaul last week, NIU’s volleyball team looks to work out its frustrations on another in-state rival when the Huskies head to Chicago to take on UIC tonight at 7 p.m.

Living up to their nickname, the Flames (6-4) have been heating up. After a slow start, UIC has won five of their last six including a first place finish last weekend at their home invitational.

“This match means a great deal,” NIU coach Ray Gooden said. “DePaul left a bad taste in our mouths and UIC is kind of a similar team being another rival.”

The Flames are led by sophomore outside hitter Katerina Hanackova who, despite being 5-foot-9, is a presence at the net, averaging 3.7 kills per game.

“She’s small but she’s very physical,” Gooden said. “She’s also very smart on the court.”

Despite only being a freshman, setter Dana Van Syckle has shown leadership on the court and is averaging 10.11 assists per game.

While playing on the road is usually tougher, four of the Huskies’ (5-6) five wins this season have come away from Victor E. Court.

One of the Huskies most consistent players lately has been outside-hitter Dani D’Ambrose, who received MAC West Player of the Week on Monday. The freshman had 29 kills against Texas Pan-American last week.
