'Nim's Island' a lighthearted family film
By LINDSEY KASTNING

Rating: 7 / 10

Starring: Abigail Breslin, Jodie Foster, Gerard Butler

Plot: On a secret island, a little girl named Nim (Abigail Breslin) reaches out to her favorite adventure author, Alex Rover (Jodie Foster), for help to find her missing father.

The good: “Nim’s Island” is not a typical children’s movie. With a young, female hero, the movie stands out by showing Nim as wise, adventurous and not afraid to ask for help. The movie is lighthearted and great for the entire family.

Although based on the book by Wendy Orr and Kelly Millard, the film sets itself apart. Branching away from a Swiss Family Robinson-type film, the moving is filled with a decent amount of action as Nim searches for her father.

The bad: There were several slow moments. Also, trying to keep up with all the places Nim goes becomes challenging as the film unfolds.

The lowdown: The movie motivates people to start reading and believe that anything can happen.
