Students have mixed reactions on registering for classes through MyNIU
By DAVID THOMAS

Registration for the general NIU population begins Monday, but honors students, athletes and other students who require unique accomodations have already used MyNIU.

Reaction to the new MyNIU system has been mixed.

Sophomore Spanish major Deanna Bach, an honors student, said she has had no problems registering for classes with MyNIU.

“I didn’t have any problems with it,” Bach said. “I started going on MyNIU when teachers began to add classes and I looked at it and started to play around with it.”

Adam Stone, director of Registration and Records, said this has been the experience of most students.

“Most students have gotten through just fine. It has been a positive experience,” Stone said. “Most questions we have gotten are trying to get an understanding of the new system and how it is different from the old system.”

Honors program coordinator Roseann Feldmann, however, said she has experienced many problems when it came time to register. Feldmann said that she received several phone calls from Honors students panicking or asking questions about the process. She also said she had problems with the system itself.

“We all knew there would be glitches, but we just didn’t know what kind they were or how devastating they would be,” Feldmann said.

Ron Anderson, sophomore organizational management major and honors student, said he was unable to register for his Accountancy 206 class. Feldmann described it as being caught in a loop.

“It kept saying, ‘pick a recitation.’ But the honors class already had a recitation,” Feldmann said.
Feldmann and Anderson called the HelpDesk at Information Technology Services and the College of Business, who told Anderson to wait until the following day.

“I tried yesterday. I tried a couple of hours ago. I still couldn’t get in,” Anderson said. Anderson said he was able to register for his other classes easily.

Stone said that MyNIU is working fine, but the departments have more responsibility.
“They’re going to the system and building their schedules on MyNIU.”

Anderson expressed similar sentiments, saying that different colleges “are better than others on getting the classes on [MyNIU].”

Despite the problems, Feldmann praised NIU staff for their patience and support, saying it’s been the one good thing that has stood out.

“It’s a great feeling to know that the person at the other end is going through the same thing you are,” Feldmann said.

Stone said if students are having trouble registering for their classes, they are encouraged to call the appropriate department to seek assistance.
