The winners of the Presidential Teaching Professors award have been announced.
This year’s recipients are David Changnon, professor of geography; Dan Gebo, professor of anthropology; and Toni Tollerud, professor of counseling, adult and higher education.
The award has been given annually since 1991 to professors who have shown excellence in teaching and commitment to the school.
To be eligible for the award, the person must be a full-time professor and have been at NIU for at least six years.
The professors who win this award are recognized for the award for the next four years.
When each professor has finished the four-year award period, he or she becomes a Distinguished Teaching Professor.
The professors each receive a medallion and extra incentives for dedication to the school.
The winners get $2,000 added to their salary, and on a separate basis, they receive $5,000 for the next four years, which is used to improve their teaching abilities.
Changnon, who has been at NIU for 16 years, said he was privileged to receive the award.
“I am very thankful and humbled by receiving an award that comes from the whole NIU community,” he said.
Gebo, who has been at NIU for 21 years, is happy to be named one of the winners.
“I’ve been at here a long time and am very happy to have been successful in teaching students,” he said.
The voting process for the professors is done by a selection committee that consists of representatives from all seven NIU colleges and representatives from the Alumni Association.
