Three DeKalb retailers were charged with selling tobacco to a minor in the third round of tobacco compliance checks by the DeKalb Police Department.

The April 8 compliance checks found La Salsa Market, 1011 W. Hillcrest Drive; 7-Eleven, 802 S. Fourth St.; and Schnucks, 975 S. Annie Glidden Road, in violation of selling tobacco to a minor.
La Salsa Market also failed the Jan. 16 check. 7-Eleven and Schnucks passed the previous checks.

Combined with checks on Jan. 16 and Nov. 6, a total of 11 retailers were found in violation of selling tobacco to a minor, with only La Salsa Market and DeKalb Mobil, 2400 Sycamore Road, failing twice throughout the three checks.

Because Schnucks was not open during the Nov. 16 check, the retailer was individually checked a third time to comply with the Illinois Liquor Control Commission grant, said Lt. Carl Leoni of the DeKalb Police Department.

Leoni said the results have been turned over to the city attorney, but he did not know if there would be additional charges for repeat violators.

For the check, minores entered the store, asking to purchase cigarettes and displaying identification that showed they were underage. If the clerk sold the minor cigarettes, he or she was given a mini-complaint with a fine of up to $500.

The checks, which are done through a $4,620 grant from the Illinois Liquor Control Commission, are performed three times a year, as required by the grant. The retailers were previously given an information kit and spoken to about selling tobacco to minors.

Leoni said the department may do an additional round of checks, but was not sure if they would have enough budgeted. The grant only requires three checks for each retailer.
