Where do you prefer to meet new friends? |

Good morning and good afternoon NIU. I am writing this letter in response to an advertisement from Toppers Pizza, in the Thursday, April 3, 2008 issue of the Northern Star.
I read the Northern Star daily, as I enjoy keeping up with the current news of the university and community, the crossword puzzle and sports news.
I read the Northern Star from front to back, and was disappointed when I read the back cover of the Star from the April, 3 2008 issue. There was an ad from Toppers that read like this:
“OUR NEW BONELESS WINGS ARE BAKED... KIND OF LIKE YOU LAST NIGHT.”
Tacky. Tasteless. Out of place. Is anyone not thinking? Does anyone realize that NIU is going through a difficult period? How does the Northern Star feel this is going to continue to move the community “Forward, Together, Forward,” when this garbage is printed for everyone to see?
The Northern Star is distributed to the surrounding communities, including multiple businesses and DeKalb High School. As the students from DeKalb High School read this, (after realizing the context of the message), I hope they are disappointed because the entire school displayed class when they showed support for NIU during their first home game after Feb. 14, and now I hope they stop showing that support until they get a promise that they are not supporting a newspaper which allows ridiculous advertising.
Toppers can deliver that message at their own store. Put a sign at the store, with an ad like this, and do not bother us with your garbage. Do you need to entice customers in a way with this stupidity?
I understand the rights we have under the freedom of speech, but let’s not give anyone the idea that NIU is associated with its students getting “baked.” It just sends a bad message. It is not funny.
I love NIU, I love reading the Star but it just disappoints me that this ad was displayed for everyone to see. We can do better. GO NIU!
