NIU Paintball Club to participate in NCPA Nationals
By JERRY BURNES

The NIU Paintball Club will travel to Lakeland, Fla., on Friday to compete in the National Collegiate Paintball Association Nationals.

Club president Dave Moore said the club was granted $1,500 by the Student Association to help cover the $3,000 total cost of the trip. The rest of the cost is being covered by the players competing in the event.

The NCPA Nationals is the biggest college-level paintball tournament in America, with over 40 colleges registered to participate. The event will be broadcast on Fox College Sports Network.

“We have practiced for this event for some time now,” Moore said. “All of the tournaments that we have played at this semester have a similar field layout. That should play to our advantage.”

NIU is currently ranked 39 out of 79 colleges and is scheduled to be in action on Saturday and Sunday.

Participating members include Moore, Vice President John Lyall, Secretary Mat Dahm, Sean Woyna and newcomer Ryan Williams.

The NIU Paintball Club has 22 members, but most could not afford to make the trip.

“The regular season was hard on many of the players due to insufficient funding for a full season of tournament play. This season, the SA granted the paintball team $750 for the regular season,” Moore said. “Since the paintball team spends that type of money to send 10 of its tournament players to a single tournament, a lot of the players had simply run out of money to play.”

The NIU Paintball Club has participated in four events this year, placing 12th, 17th, 21st and 18th. The team has earned sponsorships from Seventh Element and Dssp8ntball.com.
