A standoff between police and a DeKalb man that began shortly after 3 a.m. Friday morning ended peacefully just after 7 a.m.
At 3:07 a.m., a DeKalb County Sheriff’s deputy conducted a routine traffic stop at the corner of Hillcrest Drive and Greenbrier Road. The driver of the vehicle, later identified as 27-year-old Eric Foster of DeKalb, stepped out of his vehicle brandishing a handgun and ran inside the apartment building at 930 Greenbrier Road.
Officers from the Illinois State Police and the DeKalb police assisted sheriff’s deputies in securing the building and area surrounding. Tenants of the building were evacuated from their apartments while police officers waited for the delivery of a search warrant authorizing them to enter the suspect’s apartment.
At about 7 a.m., the owner of the property gave police officers permission to enter Apt. 11, where Foster lives. Foster was brought out in handcuffs minutes later by police and put in the back of a squad car without incident.
No shots were fired in the standoff, which lasted nearly four hours. Foster was charged with felony aggravated unlawful use of weapons, felony possession of firearm without requisite firearm owner’s ID card, felony possession of firearm ammunition without requisite firearm owner’s ID card, misdemeanor driving while license suspended and failure to signal.
Foster also had a warrant for his arrest for failure to appear in court on DUI charges.
