SA Senate disappoints with consistently low attendance

The Student Association has a unique view on prior commitments: When you don’t want to do something, just stay home.

How encouraging. As if the SA Senate isn’t on enough of a roll already, the senate last night was barely able to produce the number of representatives required for the meeting to proceed – the third week in a row attendance issues have hampered the senate’s ability to do its job.

The April 6 senate meeting was declared unofficial when the senate failed to reach the minimum requirement of 18 representatives present to conduct business. Last week, only 23 of 37 senators showed, barely meeting the minimum. And last night, the senate wasn’t able to commence until nearly 15 minutes after the designated start time, which is how long it took for the proper number of representatives to meander their way into the room. Twenty-two senators were present at the 6:13 p.m. roll call.

SA, this is starting to get ridiculous. Speaker Rob Batey, who has to feel like a lion tamer armed only with good intentions, had to go as far as asking the dedicated few in attendance to call their absent colleagues and coerce them to actually show up and fulfill the tasks at hand.

The concern and interest NIU students have as it relates to their student government is reflected in the embarrassing voting numbers that come in every year. If you’re a student and you don’t care about the fact that SA senators won’t even go as far as showing up for meetings, you should. After all, they’re playing government with your money.

It’s reassuring to know that SA members take their positions so seriously. These individuals tout themselves as future leaders of American society, and they can’t even be bothered to do their jobs.

Way to go, SA. You make yourselves less relevant every day.
