The city of DeKalb spent $234,734.15 more in snow removal costs for the 2007–2008 season than it did during 2006–2007 snow season.

The Expense Report for the 2007–2008 snow season was released at a press conference Thursday by the Department of Public Works, Street Operations Division.

City Manager Mark Biernacki and Rick Monas, director of Public Works, released the report.

“Typically, in any snow season, we see 12 to 16 events,” said Monas. “This year, it went to 30 events.”

The city received a total of 15.1 more inches of snow this season than last season, according to the report.

The report also showed a rise in the average cost for snow removal for this season on a per-inch basis of $749.43 more from last year.

The heavier snow season also resulted in an increase in both straight labor hours and overtime hours. There were 828.75 more straight labor hours and 1,224.25 more overtime hours tabulated in this season.

“We try to budget on that as best as we can, based on the trends of the last few years,” said Assistant City Manager Rudy Espiritu prior to the report being released Thursday. “This season has been especially brutal to us, considering all the snow and flooding we had to the community.”
