Caps 4 Sam held a charity race to give back to Chicago Children’s Memorial Hospital.
The Walk 4 Wisdom/Run 4 Research event took place Sunday afternoon at Hopkins Park, 1403 Sycamore Road.
The event’s purpose was to help raise awareness and funding for brain tumor research.
Mary Overbey – race director and grandmother of Sam Ihm, for whom the walk was started – said this charity event is one of many ways they have given back to Chicago Children’s Memorial Hospital for brain tumor research.
“Sam had a brain tumor when he was 10 and got it successfully removed at that hospital, so we felt that this could be a great way to give back,” she said.
Those who participated were given the option of walking the 5K.
The people who ran or walked paid a $20 pre-registration fee or $25 on the day of the race, with all of the proceeds going to the hospital.
This is the third annual race that Caps 4 Sam has hosted and received several organizations around DeKalb to help volunteer and donate.
Vendors that volunteered in making the event successful included Kohls, 2070 Sycamore Road; Culver’s, 1200 DeKalb Ave.; and several Greek organizations.
Paul Kucera, junior psychology major and member of Alpha Phi Omega, was happy to help out.
“It is a great cause and I really enjoy helping others out,” he said.
Kucera and other members of his fraternity helped distribute bags filled with a T-shirt, wristband, candy and other items to those participating in the 5K.
John Keen, sophomore accountancy major and member of Phi Kappa Sigma, likes giving back to the DeKalb community.
“The hospital needs more money for research and we are given the chance to help out by giving back to the community through this charity,” he said.
Phi Kappa Sigma has worked with Caps 4 Sam for the last two semesters by setting up collection tables at several local businesses. They also helped with traffic control for the race.
