NIU meteorologists gives summer weather predictions
By SAM BRUNELL

Summer break is just about here.

The Northern Star sat down with NIU meteorologist Gilbert Sebenste to see if summer break will also bring along some summer weather.

Northern Star: What are the normal high and low temperatures during the summer months?

Gilbert Sebenste: In June, the first half of the month should see highs in the upper 70s, with the latter half in the lower 80s. And lows should be between 55 to 61 degrees. In July, the average high is around 85, the average low between 60 to 65 or so. In August, highs average in the lower 80s, with lows between 60 to 62 degrees all month. Again, these are all averages.

NS: Will the temperature be predominantly higher or lower than usual this summer?

GS: Normally, we see 21 days of 90 degree temperatures each year. I think we’ll meet and possibly beat that this year. We could be a bit warmer than normal.

NS: When will we see the peak temperatures?

GS: Mid to late July is when we are traditionally the warmest, specifically the second to third week in July is when we peak.

NS: Will we see a lot of precipitation?

GS: I think until late May we could or maybe very early June. But then it could turn hot and drier.

NS: Do you think we will see any snow?

GS: No snow. Hail, yes.

NS: Will the temperature have rapid changes like it has during the spring?

GS: Through May, yes. After that, it should just get very warm and stay that way.
