There are a lot of things in Tupac’s music that I cannot relate to well. I don’t live a thug life, hang out with music video vixens or represent the West Coast. But there’s one thing for sure that Tupac and I have in common: We are both down with our mamas.

With the thought of Mother’s Day still lingering in my mind, and the hangover feeling from all of those manufactured Bath & Body Works smells (Why is it always lavender?), Tupac’s maternal anthem, “Dear Mama”, has made me realize just how appreciative I am of the one who gave birth to me.

In the song, Tupac examines the anecdotes from his life about everything his mother has done for him. His recurring line of “There’s no way I can pay you back/ But my plan is to show you I understand / You are appreciated” showcases a side of the “gangsta” rapper that not many are familiar with.

For one day a year, our magnificent matriarchs get the praise that they deserve. Why aren’t we more like Tupac? Why can’t we say “When I was low, you were always there for me / And never left me alone because you cared for me?”

The television show “30 Rock” coined a great phrase that is applicable to everyone who wants to continue the Hallmark holiday lovefest for one more day. “Mother, you carried me for nine months, now let me carry you.”

Tupac, wherever you may be, thank you. You have not only taught me that you like your drinks with one-part Alizé and one-part Cristal, but you have also taught me to appreciate my mama.
