A 2008 NIU graduate driving a MedStar ambulance was shot twice on Monday night after responding to a different shooting incident.

Patrick Bierman, 23, is in fair condition Wednesday at St. Louis University Hospital after being shot while transporting another shooting victim, police said.

He managed to turn the vehicle over to another emergency medical technician, after being shot, police said.

The ambulance was traveling on I-64 when the incident occurred when shots were fired from either a red or burgundy car, police said.

One bullet was removed from the arm of Bierman, but another is in his chest with doctors saying its located too close to his aorta to remove safely.

Police do not know if the two incidents are related, but it is one angle they are looking at.

Bierman has been employed by MedStar for two months.

Information from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and KTVI, the FOX affiliate in St. Louis, was used in this report.
