DeKalb mayor Frank Van Buer loses battle with cancer

DeKalb mayor Frank Van Buer passed away on Wednesday, after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

Van Buer, who has served as mayor since 2005 spent the last few days at home with his wife and family.

"Your encouragement and support have been touching to my family and me," Van Buer said on Tuesday in a city press release. "As mayor, I have been honored to serve DeKalb and to work with the City Council and City staff."

Flags at all city owned buildings are flying at half staff.

A new mayor pro-tempore will be appointed at the next city council meeting, still scheduled for Monday, July 28. An acting mayor will be appointed at a later date, the press release said.

"He was one of the most selfless men that I have ever known," said Assistant City
Manager Rudy Espiritu. "The city will dearly miss him.”

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced shortly.
